Luton Hat Factory
SDA were appointed by TE Neville Construction (Luton) to refurbish and redevelop the Luton Hat Factory Arts Centre. The design introduces a new reception and foyer space to connect the large performance spaces with the ground floor café bar and “design start-up” spaces.
The project retains and exposes the history of the building and creates a blank canvas for the artists and designers to work from.
Design cues are taken from the existing materials and details found within the retained buildings to inform new finishes, which aims to blend the new with the old.
The new foyer provides gathering spaces and vertical circulation allowing all parts of the facility to interconnect and forms a shop window into its heart, visible from the main thoroughfare to the rail station.
The spaces will initially be occupied by twelve “ambassadors” who are supported by Luton Culture to develop their artistic, performance and design skills within a conducive environment.
Funding for the £1.24M capital project came from the Arts Council, Luton Borough Council, SEMLEP LGV and Luton Culture.
