SDA Architects were thrilled to be invited to Framwellgate School Durham to host a design workshop for their Year 7 pupils.
Claire Smith, Associate Director, helped pupils create a paving design for the entrance of their new Sports Hall. Claire worked with teacher, Gavin Watson, to create the brief for the students. The students were told that their design should use the theme of ‘Olympics’ and submit their design as a sketch, on the computer, or even as a model.
Three pupils that entered the competition were invited to the workshop which was hosted by Claire. Claire said: “We asked the pupils to critique the designs; what they liked and what they didn’t. Then we asked the students to work together to come up with two designs; one they really wanted, and another that was more simplified.
At the end of the workshop the pupils had a chance to walk around the new Sports Hall on a VR headset. Claire said:
“I was amazed at how creative their ideas were. I think the children were inspired to become an Architect by the end of the workshop. We’re really looking forward to putting together the final design.”
The final paving design will be chosen and constructed onsite in June.
Framwellgate School Durham’s new Sports Hall was completed in August 2017. The scheme was developed by SDA using specialist 3D software (Revit).
